Meet People Where They Are

The insight: Products succeed when they meet people where they are—in their language, solving their actual problems, at their level of understanding. Technical excellence doesn't matter if people don't get it.

What made the winning hackathon project work:

  1. People were already using it - "I used this this morning to do my job"
  2. Simple enough concept - Non-technical people immediately understood the value
  3. Real problem - Described something the audience actually experiences

The mistake most teams make: Building for the audience you wish you had instead of the audience you actually have. Making things impressive instead of useful. Prioritizing sophistication over simplicity.

How to test if you're meeting people where they are: Can someone who doesn't work on your product explain what it does and why it matters in one sentence? If not, you're probably not meeting them where they are.
